Interview with Amber from Cotton's Corner

Each month I open up advertising to various blogs, brands, and businesses and every once in a while, I showcase those awesome sponsors with their own special interview! This month, I'm interviewing Amber Cotton from Cotton's Corner!

I'm pretty excited to feature her this month because not only is she an awesome sponsor, but she's a wonderful blogger and writer too! Not to mention, a mental health advocate!

This perfectly ambitious woman is from a small town called Greensboro in Alabama, but she's been living in Minneapolis for the past five and a half years. Surprisingly enough, Greensboro is only about 2.5 hours from where my husband and I are currently stationed!

Nevertheless, Amber has taken the time to share her story with us and I can't wait for you to learn all about her and her blog!

Hey, Amber! Tell me a little about yourself and how your blog got started :)
I’ve been reading since I was around 10 and it all started with the Harry Potter series with J.K. Rowling. After that, my family was giving me books for holidays and I spent summers reading until school started again.

I’ve doodled story ideas in notebooks for years, but never considered myself a writer. It wasn’t until recently that I thought about writing seriously and that’s how Cotton’s Corner was born. I’ve been writing about my journey in outlining and creating my novel so far, and I intend to keep chronicling every step of the process.

What do you blog about?
Writing, reading, editing, and I’ve recently decided to blog about books. More rants than reviews since many of the books I read aren’t new releases and have been on my TBR list for years.

What's your favorite thing about writing your blog?
Once the post is published, I really enjoy sharing it on social media and discussing the content with others. If I connect with a reader or give someone a new perspective, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.

If you could only write about one topic on your blog, what would it be? Why?
I’ve been writing about drafting my book, but I would prefer to write about books or one of my book rants. Obviously, I’m more experienced at reading than writing and it’s more familiar territory. Plus, reading great novels inspired me to write in the first place.

If you had the knowledge and skills to write about anything, what would you write about?
Writing a novel well such as use of language - I really enjoy great descriptions - and ways to improve character development. I feel those are my two biggest weaknesses and many others’ as well. Or how to effectively publish a book and market it.

Do you have one particular post or series that you’re most proud of? Which is it and why?
I had a lot of fun writing the announcement for my novel-in- progress, Samantha Darkened. I liked sharing the idea with other participants of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and was glad to hear that people thought that it sounded interesting.

Are you currently working on any professional or personal projects?
I’m working on the blog more as well as becoming a Bookstagrammer (posting pictures of books on Instagram) and a BookTuber (creating videos about books on YouTube). I’m really nervous, but I think I could meet some interesting and fun people and join some people that I admire.

Do you have any collaborations that you’re looking forward to?
None at the moment, but I want to change that in the next year (2017) to create content with someone I admire.

Where would you like to see your blog at in the next few years?
I want to focus on creating content that others want to share or follow. However, I feel like I’m still so new that I don’t know how to create realistic goals. My goals right now include posting weekly and engaging with the followers that I do have. So far, I have connected with some great people.

What do you believe blogging success is? Do you think you’ve achieved it yet? If not, what steps do you plan on taking to achieve it?
For my blog to be successful, I want to continue writing content that others enjoy and gain a following on my social media platform. I’ve achieved that so far as I still enjoy writing content and creating an e-mail and social media list so I can interact with my audience.

What are five of your favorite posts from your blog?

Is there anything else about you, a piece of advice, or a special message you’d like me to share with my readers?
My advice would be, don’t let anyone stop you. If you are holding back from pursuing a passion or an idea because you are afraid of what someone may think or have already said, then let that fear go. I wish I would have pursued blogging and everything I’m doing now much sooner. Maybe I won’t be as successful as some people, but I’m having fun doing it so far. It’s made a positive difference in my life and my mental well-being.
