Book Review: The Sun Is Also a Star*

As some of you know, I've been using Blogging for Books for a couple months now. I absolutely love reading, so it's nice to get a free book every once in a while :)

Over the course of the last few months, I've had an interesting experience to say the least. I mostly joined because I wanted to get a copy of one of Mindy Kaling's books, but there weren't any available by the time that I signed up.

Nevertheless, I looked around the available books and picked a couple out! Since then, I've reviewed The Little Paris Bookshop, Approval Junkie, and June. The first one I loved, but I can't truly say the same about the others.

Of course, I still wanted to continue on with the partnership and by the time that I was allowed to pick another book, I was quite happy with my options! I had seen The Sun Is Also a Star on some of my favorite bookstagram accounts and I just knew that I had to get it! So, I immediately signed into my account and requested a copy! The rest is history :)

Synopsis:
Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

Review:
To be honest, I haven't read anything by Nicola Yoon before. I'd heard good things about her work, but I haven't really been in the mood to read anything categorized as YA contemporary or romance. Mostly due to the fact that I've been working on my own YA fantasy novel. Of course, once I needed inspiration for a romance scene, I couldn't help read every YA romance novel I could get my hands on, this one included!

First things first, I absolutely LOVE the cover for The Sun Is Also a Star! I can't help but be drawn to any cover that has a black or white background with high contrast colors. So Nicola and her team definitely get an A+ in that department! And of course, the crafty side of me loves it too :)

Now, for the nitty gritty! I absolutely loved this book and for so many reasons! Honestly, there hasn't been another book that I've been so eager to review like this one before!

For one, I really liked the way that Nicola organizes her writing. She does an amazing job writing from two different perspectives and even manages to keep the reader interested in a book that only spans the course of a day!

I think my favorite part though, was the extra "history" chapters. It's not often that we get to know so much about the minor characters in a story and I really enjoyed the change of pace that The Sun Is Also a Star provided. I also liked that she not only used these sections to dive further into the lives of these characters; but also to provide context into various concepts and words that the readers might not know, while also tying everything back into the story.

As I mentioned earlier, I think that Nicola does a great job of not only writing as two different characters, but really bringing them to life too! Personally, I was able to relate to both Natasha and Daniel and I think that's a big part of why I loved the book so much. Plus, I think the varying chapters helped break up any info dumps that may have occurred trying to get to know each of the characters.

One of the other things that I loved about The Sun Is Also a Star is the truth within the novel. I couldn't help but jot down a few of the parts that I felt most connected to: 1. Like Natasha, I'm not a cynic. I'm a realist. 2. Like Daniel, I always planned to do the right thing to provide for myself and I pushed away my passions. 3. Like Natasha's mother, I have a fear of disappointment which I try to combat by never getting my hopes up.

Honestly, it's one thing to create relatable characters within your writing, but what Nicola did was much more than that. I felt like she let a little bit of herself shine through her novel as well, whether she believes these things or not. Many of the points made in the novel about love, faith, fear, and destiny are all feelings that someone in the world feels and including these things is what I think put The Sun Is Also a Star ahead of all the other novels in her genre.

Overall, I would 100% recommend this book! In fact, I loved it so much that I knew I was going to order her other book before I was even halfway finished reading this one! Nicola Yoon is an author unlike any that I've read before. She has inspired me to write outside of the box and I can't wait to read her next novel! The Sun Is Also a Star is a one of a kind novel that you just can't help but love!
