A few weeks ago, I was scrolling through social media and I happened upon an advertisement for Khutsala Artisans. I hadn't heard of them before, but their 50% off special pulled me in! I immediately checked out their website and fell in love!
Not only did they have the type of necklace I was looking for, but they had an amazing mission statement as well! I quickly made a purchase and reached out to one of the Heart for Africa employees. Since doing so, we've partnered to bring you a couple of awesome product reviews and giveaways! So here's to the beginning of a wonderful collaboration :)

Everyone has challenges in life and those challenges do not go away when you start a healthy living journey. Some might improve while others might get worse, but it won’t make them just disappear. Some of my biggest challenges in my own journey have ranged in variety, from long-term and temporary issues, to life events as a whole.
Emotional/Stress Eating
This is always something that I’ve struggled with, and throughout my journey it has become more apparent. There are times that it has improved and other times where it has reared its ugly head in the worst ways for me. Keeping busy when the urge hits, as well as drinking water, focusing on grabbing healthier alternatives to satisfy cravings, and going for a walk, have all been ways for me to overcome my emotional and stress eating.
Sticking with Strength Training
Maybe I’m a cardio junky, or maybe I just find most strength training boring. In the past, I have been able to stick with a strength training routine for a few weeks to a month at the most. Then an illness, or an injury, would hit and I would get sidelined and found it extremely difficult to get back into the strength training rhythm. I still need to work on sticking to a strength training routine after over two years in my journey, and because I know how important it is to my physical wellbeing, I will not give up on figuring out a way to stick with it!

As some of you know, I've been using Blogging for Books for a couple months now. I absolutely love reading, so it's nice to get a free book every once in a while :)
Over the course of the last few months, I've had an interesting experience to say the least. I mostly joined because I wanted to get a copy of one of Mindy Kaling's books, but there weren't any available by the time that I signed up.
Nevertheless, I looked around the available books and picked a couple out! Since then, I've reviewed The Little Paris Bookshop, Approval Junkie, and June. The first one I loved, but I can't truly say the same about the others.
Of course, I still wanted to continue on with the partnership and by the time that I was allowed to pick another book, I was quite happy with my options! I had seen The Sun Is Also a Star on some of my favorite bookstagram accounts and I just knew that I had to get it! So, I immediately signed into my account and requested a copy! The rest is history :)
Synopsis:
Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.
Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.
The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

As a chronic illness warrior, pain is not new to me. Unfortunately, it's a daily nuisance that I have to deal with. On the bright side though, there are plenty of ways that I can distract myself from it!
Of course, I could easily take one of my many prescriptions or use an expensive medical device, but I like to stick to the more natural approach. Personally, I don't like adding anything else to my body if I don't have to, so I often try these seven techniques!
1. Dive into a new world.
Whether it's in a book, a tv show, or a movie, immerse yourself into something new! Find something that you can jump into and leave your world behind. Personally, I enjoy a good book! I tend to get restless while watching a tv screen and I can't help but focus more on the pain or hop around on social media. Of course, if screens are more your thing, then turn one on and let the pain be gone!
2. Find something funny.
While we're on the topic of screens, I figured this would be another helpful tip! According to some, laughter is the best medicine, so you should find something that you know will make you laugh! My husband and I really enjoy Joe Santagato videos, but I won't turn down something with a cute animal either! Whatever your preference is, it's only one search away!
3. Take a nap.
Now, I know this doesn't work for everybody, but it can be an easy way to distract yourself from the pain! Personally, my body fights me anytime I try to take a nap while it's still light outside, but most people don't have that problem. So, put on your pj's and go count some sheep!
4. Challenge yourself mentally.
This isn't necessarily my go to for distracting myself from pain, since it's my go to when I'm board, but it still works! Taking the time to challenge yourself mentally can be a great distraction! And the best part is, you can do it by yourself or with other people! For yourself, you might enjoy word searches, crossword puzzles, sudoko, or solitaire. And if you're with someone, you might enjoy chess or checkers!
5. Work on a big project.
Sometimes all we need to do to get our minds off of something is to put them onto something else. In this case, it's a big project! However, since you're already in pain, I don't recommend any heavy lifting or home renovations. Instead, you can write that novel you've always dreamt about or declutter your closet. Whichever big project you have in mind, get to working on it!
6. Explore meditation.
Although I've never successfully meditated, I can say that attempting to is a great distraction! So whether or not you're successful, just focusing on your breathing can be enough to filter out any thoughts of pain. After taking a stress management class in college, I learned that there of TONS of breathing exercises and meditation techniques. So, just pick one and see if it works!
7. Listen to music.
Whether you're mindlessly singing along or taking the time to digest every lyric, listening to music can be a great distraction! And if you're a multi-tasker, that's even better! You could easily listen to music while working on your big project for double the distraction! And if you really don't know what to do, you could make some new playlists too!
How do you distract yourself from pain? Tell me in the comments below!

As you know, I've started writing a series about writing my novel! I've previously written three posts in the series and you can find them below:
Today, I'll be diving further into each of the plot points that I mentioned in my previous post, How I Organize My Novel.
As I've mentioned before, my novel is broken down as follows:
- There are four acts (well, technically three)
- Each act has two sequences.
- Each sequence has three to five chapters.
- Each chapter has three or more scenes.
Within those pieces, I have eight main plot points.
- Inciting incident
- Lock-in
- 1st obstacle
- 1st culmination
- Subplot obstacle
- Main culmination
- Third act twist
- Resolution
Of course, after doing more research, I realized that wasn't going to work out too well. So, I started looking up more information on the three act version of novel plotting and came up with a list of the most important plot points.
And while I didn't have the material for each and every one of them, I was able to come up with new material that bettered my story and I want to help you do the same! So, here's a little bit more information about each of these plot points!
1. Inciting Incident
The inciting incident, also known as the point of attack, will occur in the first couple pages of your novel, but often occurs halfway through the first act. The event will be one that opens up future possibilities for your main character. It is used to set up possible tension to come and it's a crucial component used to engage your audience. Mainly because, the main character will need to go through this event, in order to obtain their main objective.
2. Lock-In
The lock-in can usually be found in sequence two towards the end of act one. The reason this plot point is considered the "Lock-in" is because the protagonist can no longer return to their feeling of normalcy. In fact, backing out is nearly impossible. Whether they're literally locked to something or their back up plan has been ruined, the possibility of getting out is zero to none. Whatever this lock-in may be, it is important to note that it will set up the central predicament for the main character. Not only that, but protagonist can't walk away, due to the stakes, and is instead pushed into a different direction.
3. 1st Obstacle
The first obstacle has been called many different things: rising action, raising the stakes, the first act break, etc. Personally though, I just call it the first obstacle. In my writing, I use this as a place to not only build off of the tension from the lock-in scene, but also to build up to my midpoint. I like keeping my readers on their toes, especially since I always want to give away too much information. So, obstacles are always a go to in my book! Other authors like to use this as a place to stir in some drama or throw the main character into a new location, but that's not a hard and fast rule that you need to follow.
4. 1st Culmination
The 1st culmination, also known as the midpoint, usually occurs halfway through act two and it is either a success or a failure. Whatever it is, it should mirror the end. So, if it's a tragedy, then the 1st culmination should be a failure that will lead to the ultimate failure; and if it's a victorious ending, then the 1st culmination should be a success that later leads to the ultimate success. When writing the actual scenes, it's important to remember that the midpoint has a huge effect on the plot.
5. Subplot Obstacle
One of the common problems that writers can face is a little thing called the "second act drag." Lucky for you, there's a solution! And it's as simple as including a subplot in your novel! Out of all of the plot points, I think this one was the easiest for me to plan. I had already had a subplot that I was working with and I knew how I wanted it to end, so I had already begun brainstorming ideas that could lead up to that point. So, once I found out that a subplot obstacle was part of my outline, I just had to pick one of the ideas that I already had in mind. Some common subplots include: friendships, relationships, careers, secret missions, and more!
6. Main Culmination
The main culmination, also known as the climax, is the highest or lowest point of the protagonists journey so far. When planning the climax for your novel, it's important to note that usually, there are two sequences between the 1st culmination and the main culmination. If you read my post, How I Organize My Novel, you will see that I followed the same pattern. During this plot point, the climax is represented by a major success or failure. Before you decide which one though, it's important to note that this event normally brings your protagonist's second act objective to a close. And since they've dealt with their second act objective, the climax will propel them towards a new goal in the third act.
7. Third Act Twist
As I'm sure you can guess, the third act twist does come during the third act, usually between sequences seven and eight. In order to effectively use this plot point, the third act tension needs to be established early on in sequence seven. In addition, your entire writing style will alter a little bit too. The timing will be faster paced, the scenes will be shorter, and the setting will be simpler. The reason that this twist is different from the others is because this one actually changes the overall plot of the story. This is the twist that has the chance of ruining the protagonist's chance at achieving the third act objective. Some author's refer to this plot point as the "ultimate show-down" scene.
8. Resolution
The resolution is the end of the story. No matter the outcome, this is what your readers have been waiting for! It's the reason they kept on reading! As I mentioned earlier, some of the obstacles and culminations will have foreshadowed what the final outcome would be, whether it be good or bad. Whichever one you decide on, make sure that you follow through with it until the end! This is the time when readers are going to want clarity. They'll want all of their questions answered and they'll want their version of a happily ever after. So, make sure you're that you're thinking about that. Of course, don't give too much away either!- 6:00:00 PM

With the start of a new year it is important to reflect back on the prior year, assess what went well, what didn’t and decide where you want to go next. It takes a lot of mental toughness, self-love, and discipline to create the life you want. Simply coasting along on cruise control reacting to life can lead to victim mentality and stagnation.
So how do we prepare exactly? Dr. Sanam Hafeez PsyD, a NYC based licensed clinical psychologist, teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College and the founder and Clinical Director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services shares some key ways to get mentally fit for the new year so you can move forward successfully.
1. Clear clutter.
Look at your surroundings. If you have junk drawers galore, a messy car, countertops and cabinets that are full of stuff you don’t even use, it is time to clear the clutter. According to Dr. Hafeez, “cluttered spaces reflect a cluttered mind. If you want to wipe the slate clean to allow room for new people and circumstances that serve you, you must get your mind clear. Many of my patients who describe themselves as anxious, stressed or even depressed say they feel better when they start clearing up their physical space.”
2. Exercise a little bit.
Dr. Hafeez who also helps people overcome body image issues encourages aiming for smaller attainable wins. “People set high fitness goals for the new year and then fall off after a month or less. This leaves their self esteem shot which is when self loathing and depression can sneak in.” She advises setting a reachable daily goal of perhaps walking 10,000 steps per day. There are step-counting apps available to measure how much you walk and they add up quickly. “When you see accomplishment on a daily basis you stick with it, this sets your mind in a positive direction,” says Dr. Hafeez.
3. Eat mind-boosting foods.
Mental fitness also has to do with how well our minds work. A loss of memory or the ability to concentrate or focus can easily shift with an improved diet. “Research finds that along with other benefits, foods rich in Omega-3, such as some fish and nuts, as well as those full of antioxidants can help protect the brain from memory decline.” So eating more fish such as salmon and add fruits such as blackberries and blueberries to your diet can help. The good news is that brain boosting foods include delicious options such as chocolate, guacamole (avacados) and sunflower seeds.
4. Color!
The adult coloring book bandwagon is a good one to jump on. According to Dr. Hafeez coloring requires total focus on the present. The repetitive motion of coloring provides relief from stress and anxiety by entering a meditative state. “Not everyone can sit still and breathe for 15 minutes per day, but they certainly can color. It’s absolutely a fun way to achieve mindfulness and shake off the day,” explains Dr. Hafeez.
5. Apologize and forgive.
A fast way to mental fitness is forgiveness! “Carrying around resentments and guilt wears us down and can lead to serious illness such as cancer or stroke. If you experienced a tough break up, divorce or perhaps the 2016 political climate led to arguments and lost friends, reach out apologize and seek forgiveness and move on. Remember, forgiveness doesn’t mean you condone a hurtful behavior. Forgiveness frees you and the other person making it easier to move forward.
6. Learn something new.
Challenge your brain by learning a new language, how to cook, paint, do Tai Chi. Pick something you think would be interesting or useful to learn and learn it. If you avoided cooking your whole life, learning the basics will serve your brain very well. According to Dr. Hafeez, “the more we can activate the cognitive functions of our brains the better our short and long-term memory and hand eye coordination will be.”

When I was offered the chance to apply for a spot on Tim Tebow's book launch team, I stopped everything I was doing and applied right then and there! I know I've had authors send me books before, but this was something different! I actually had the opportunity to review a book by a celebrity and not only that, but I'd also be a part of my first book launch team!
To me, I didn't even care if I ended up meeting Tim or talk to him at all during the process. For me, this was all about the learning experience. So while I was beyond excited to get an advanced copy of this book, I was over the moon knowing that being a part of this team could possibly help me in the future when I release my own novels.
Nevertheless, I couldn't wait to get approved and get the book in my hands! Tim Tebow is an amazing human being and I can't help but admire the way he shares his love for God with the rest of the world!
Synopsis:
Who are you when life is steady?
Who are you when storms come?
Most of us have been on the receiving end of rejection, a broken dream, or heartbreak. And while this is not an easy space to go through, when we are grounded in the truth, we can endure the tough times.
In this powerful book, Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow passionately shares glimpses of his journey staying grounded in the face of disappointment, criticism, and intense media scrutiny. Following an exceptional college football career with the Florida Gators and a promising playoff run with the Denver Broncos, Tebow was traded to the New York Jets. He was released after one season.
In Shaken, Tebow talks about what he’s learned along the way, building confidence in his identity in God, not the world. This moving book also features practical wisdom from Scripture and insights gained from others who have impacted Tebow in life-changing ways.
Though traveling hard roads is not easy, it’s always worth it!

If you told me a year ago that Perfectly Ambitious would take off in the way that it has, I never would have believed you! The support that you guys have given me has truly been amazing!
Of course, there's still a couple lessons learned too! In fact, there are quite a few things that I wish someone would have prepared me for on this journey called blogging. Today, I'll be sharing seven of them with you!
1. You don't need a niche.
No matter what other bloggers say, I will never agree with the niche mentality. Personally, I feel that as long as you have a clear focus, your blog can succeed. There's no reason to force yourself into a box, unless you want to. If you want to talk about everything under the sun, go ahead, do it! If you want to stick to one specific category, that's ok too! Just don't feel the need to do what everyone else is saying you need to do.
2. You need to have a well thought out plan.
Originally, I scheduled myself to post five times a week and although it worked for a while, it eventually became too much. So, this year I had to workout a better plan for myself and I don't think I should have any problem sticking to it! No matter what you decide though, know that it's ok to alter your plan here and there. You are the only person that will know what is and isn't working for you and your blog, so trust yourself!
3. You can make money from day one.
You guys have no idea, how badly I wish someone had told me this in the beginning! I waited months after starting my blog to start monetizing it and I definitely regret it. Had I known that any and all pageviews could add up to some sort of income, then I would have taken advantage of it! Not to mention, all the other ways you can monetize your blog too!
4. You will need to spend a little money.
It's true, but it will almost always be worth it! The first time I started blogging, I spent far too much money thinking that's what I had to do to be successful. I got an official Wordpress website, a .com domain, and private hosting. Little did I know, that wasn't the best way to go about it; instead, this was. Either way though, you should be wise with your money. At this point in time, I only spend money on things that I think will benefit me and/or make my life easier. Many of which, I list on my resources page and in my blog stats & income reports!
5. You will need to take blogging seriously.
When I first started blogging, I had no idea how much work it really was. I knew I'd have to write posts and take photos, but it's so much more than that! Ultimately, you're starting a business and that requires a lot of work. You aren't only going to be head writer and editor, but you're also going to be a graphic designer, a web designer, a social media manager, and so much more! Being a blogger is hard work, but it's also an amazing opportunity!
6. You are going to experience critiques.
Whether or not you ask for them, you are bound to run into critics. They might show up in the form of social media trolls, rude blog comments, or inner thoughts. Whatever the case may be, just know that you can move past them. For every hater you come across, there are so many awesome individuals out there supporting you! Remember, you've got friends, family, readers, and even other bloggers on your side!
7. You will never stop learning.
It's true! Time and time again, I've found myself searching for tutorials online. Over the last year, I've taught myself a little bit of code, I've delve further into the world of graphic design, and I've even expanded my knowledge of social media marketing. At some point, you will find yourself looking up tutorials, signing up for free courses, and even shelling out money for those big courses too; and it's 100% a good thing! Finding something that you're passionate about that also keeps you on your toes is the best kind of work!
Hopefully, through writing this post, I'll have prepared a couple of you for the journey that is blogging. And in case you're looking to start a blog, I've got a quick tutorial for you too!
For those of you that have been blogging for a while, are there any points that you'd like to add to this list? Tell me in the comments below!

A couple months ago, I decided that I was going to start tracking all of my blog stats, social media followers, income, and expenses. I've seen a lot of big bloggers do this and I've been inspired to do the same, especially by Melissa Griffin. I mean did you see her report from September 2016? She made over $170k!
Obviously my numbers will be no where near hers, but they're still worth keeping track of! I know sometimes it can get overwhelming to see bloggers making thousands of dollars, so I thought it was important to show what it looks like for me. I only launched this blog in January 2016, so I still have a lot to learn, but I'm glad I can share it with you!
Actually, I'm more than glad, I'm super excited! I have been watching my numbers and waiting for the month to be over, so I can finally compare everything. Usually my husband is the math guy, but I can't wait to calculate everything!
Traffic Report
December Traffic
- Pageviews: 955 (+ 173.64%)
- Unique Visitors: 557 (+ 1,014%)
- Sessions: 673 (+ 325.95%)
- Duration: 1:10 (- 69.16 %)
- Bounce Rate: 76.82% (+ 1247.72%)
- New Sessions: 79.79% (+ 157.39%)
After getting hacked last month, I decided to figure out how to best take control over my Google Analytics account! Unfortunately though, I hadn't realized that my tracking code had also stopped working. So, I was unable to track my traffic from December 3rd until December 15th, which is why my numbers are so low. However, between my Google Analytics account and my Google Adsense account, I can estimate that my actual pageviews would have been closer to1,850 for the month of December.
On the bright side though, I figured out exactly how to protect my Google Analytics account from future spam! You can read all about it in my recent post, "5 Changes You Need to Make to Your Google Analytics Account Right Now!"
On the bright side though, I figured out exactly how to protect my Google Analytics account from future spam! You can read all about it in my recent post, "5 Changes You Need to Make to Your Google Analytics Account Right Now!"
December Traffic Sources
- Social: 52.70% (+ 278.59%)
- Pinterest: 44.57% (N/M)
- Facebook: 39.59% (N/M)
- Instagram: 0.88% (N/M)
- Twitter: 8.80% (N/M)
- Blogger: 5.87% (N/M)
- Google+: 0% (0%)
- Direct: 14.22% (N/M)
- Referral: 17.93% (-69.21%)
- Organic: 15.15% (-45.60%)
Again, due to the technical difficulties, my December traffic sources are a little off as well. However, I was able to track some data and it looks to be accurate based on the 15 or so odd days that I was able to get data for. However, since the last month's data was skewed as well, many of the percentages increased from zero. Unfortunately though, the mathematical equation that I use to determine percentage increased cannot be calculated from zero. So, for those calculations, I included the notation "N/M" otherwise known as "not meaningful."
Social Media Report
December Social Media Growth
- Instagram: 1,264 (+ 5.95%)
- Twitter: 1,536 (+ 8.09%)
- Pinterest: 1,133 (+ 18.27%)
- Bloglovin': 290 (+ 6.62%)
- Facebook: 139 (+ 54.44%)
- Google+: 36 (+ 24.14%)
- Email Subscribers: 51 (+ 24.39%)
My percentages definitely look better this month! Towards the end of November, I made time to sit down and plan out (almost) all of my social media posts for the entire month of December! And it definitely paid off! I've made so much progress with my social media accounts and I can't wait to see how they do next month!
Profit & Loss Report
December Income
- Freelance: $47
- Affiliate Programs: $44.74
- Ads: $1.27

- Products:
- Influenster Box: Free ($52 + includes shipping)
- Book: Free ($18.99 + includes shipping)
- Total Income: $109.48 + $70.99 worth of free products
I've gotta admit, I definitely could have done better this time around. I planned tons of material for Holiday Gift Guides and the holiday season in general, but I never got around to posting them. So, I lost out on a lot of potential affiliate income. Nevertheless, I still think it was a pretty good month!
December Expenses
- Storenvy: $9
- Adobe *: $32.39
- ConvertKit *: $29
- Blog Boss Babes *: $37
- BoardBooster *: $5
- Pinterest Ad *: $20
- Total Expenses: $132.39
(Anything with an '*' next to it is an affiliate link)
Total Profit: - $22.91 + $70.99 worth of free products
This month, I decided to upgrade my BoardBooster account from the free trial to the lowest paying gig. I now get 500 pins a month for $5 and it's pretty awesome! Just actively using this tool has helped grow my Pinterest following by 18.27% and of course that translates into traffic as well! In addition to that, I also decided to try out the Pinterest ad system. My goal was to spend $5 total, but I soon realized that I accidentally selected the option to spend $5/day. Luckily, I was able to catch that in time. So my monthly blog expenses did go up a little bit, but it's nothing I can't handle!
Here's to hoping I earn even more next month! With the help of you guys, I'm able to turn my dream into my business :) You guys are awesome!

As you guys might have noticed, I haven't been following my blogging schedule 100%. I've been sick on and off for the last few weeks and it's really taken a toll on me. However, I did try to spend a couple days catching up! So, I was able to publish a lot of my unfinished blog posts and ended up with 11 posts instead of my original three!
Goal Report
Last Month's Goals:
- Finish secret project
- Publish at least 18 blog posts
- Hit 5k total followers/subscribers
- Write at least 3 guest blog posts
This Month's Goals:
- Finish at least 3 future blog posts
- Collaborate with other bloggers
- Hit 5K total followers/subscribers
- Reach 2.5K pageviews
Sadly, this month's goal report is pretty disappointing. I haven't exactly been able to follow up with my goals this month. My secret project is taking much longer than anticipated, mostly because I keep adding things to it. And I definitely didn't publish 18 blog posts this month, but I can say that I wrote at least that many since I've got a head start on my 2017 posts! As for my social media goal, I was hundreds of followers away from 5K; but I think with some continued work and some social media threads, I'll be able to make it happen in 2017! Oh and those guest posts, they certainly didn't happen haha.
Overall though, I'm still proud of myself. Whether or not I accomplished the things on this list, I still managed to accomplish a lot. I outlined all of my goals for 2017, planned the content for both of my blogs for all of 2017, and did a bunch more! I'm truly excited to see what 2017 brings!
