How I Tripled My Pinterest Following in 10 days
6:00:00 PMPinterest is one of the best social media platforms to bring traffic to your blog or website. However, I have not been utilizing it the way that I should have been. I tend to spend most of my time on Twitter and Instagram. Of course, I use Pinterest every once in a while, but I really haven't had a strategy for the last six months. Fortunately, I watched an awesome webinar by Melyssa Griffin from The Nectar Collective and she explained the importance of using Pinterest as a blogger.
After watching the webinar, I added "redo Pinterest" to my to my ongoing to-do list. However, it sat on my to-do list for quite some time, weeks actually. Eventually, I bit the bullet and decided to sit down and get to work. I had dreaded it long enough and I knew that it needed to be done. Much to my surprise, it wasn't as bad as I though it would be. It only took me a few days to make the necessary changes and it has made all the difference in my blog traffic! Take a look for yourself :)
Pin-Worthy Images
The first change that I made was a complete redo of all of my title images. Originally, I created my images with Instagram in mind. I wanted my images to be cohesive with the overall theme of my Instagram feed, instead of what was best for Pinterest. It resulted in last minute staged photos and the overuse of props. Now I have a file full of pin-worthy title images that can easily be edited for new blog posts. The best part is, they match my brand and work well with Pinterest's algorithm. You can see the difference between my original title images and my current title images below:
Business Accounts
Next, I converted my personal account to a business account. It wasn't hard to do and it opened up the doors to a variety of tools. Bloggers and businesses that take advantage of Pinterest business accounts can receive brand guidelines, Pinterest analytics, promoted pins, rich pins, and various save buttons.
Rich Pins
The biggest reason that I converted my personal account to a business account was for rich pins. If you haven't heard of rich pins before, they basically just allow you to add extra details to pins. They pull information directly from the picture or post that you are sharing on Pinterest, so you don't have to write it in yourself. Not only that, but they also show your branding. You can see the difference between my original pins and my rich pins below:
Popular Boards
After making sure that my rich pins included all of the correct information, I updated my Pinterest boards. My Pinterest account had been a mix of personal and business, and it was very hard to navigate. It's important that your Pinterest reflects your blog or overall brand. There were boards that didn't line up with the focus of my blog, so I went ahead and converted those to secret boards. I also made sure that my boards were organized in order of importance. Once that was done, I created more accurate titles and made sure that my cover images matched my blog's color scheme.
Professional Bio
I also updated my bio. I originally used my blog's name and focus, but it just wasn't attracting followers or traffic. So, I quickly made the decision to switch it up. I changed my blog's name to my own, with a couple key words describing myself. Next, I adjusted my actual bio. I ended up keeping my blog's focus at the beginning of my bio, but I ended it with a call to action and a link. You can see it below:
Profile Image
Changing my profile image was probably the smallest change that I made in this entire process. I was originally using my blog's logo as my profile picture, but I decided to change it to one of my professional headshots instead. I think it was a necessary change since the account is now under my name. I also felt that a picture of myself was more inviting then my blog's logo as well as more relatable. It's important that your followers know the person behind the brand.
BoardBooster
The final thing that I did was sign up for Board Booster. If you haven't heard of BoardBooster before, it's a website that allows you to schedule your pins and provides other Pinterest help. They have a lot of great tools to help you maximize your Pinterest traffic. I don't know about you, but I don't have hours to pin to my boards everyday. That's why BoardBooster is great! They create secret boards for you that automatically pin to your public boards, at whatever rate and time you want them too! Now I just pin to my secret boards before bed and BoardBooster does the rest! If you're interested in signing up for their service, I would love for you to use my referral link! Plus, you'll get a free month trial :)
Overall, I didn't really make too many changes. In fact, some of them were purely for selfish reasons. I signed up for BoardBooster specifically to make my life easier and you should too! The rest of the changes were simple, minus redoing all of my photos. However, I definitely recommend doing so, if you don't already have pin-worthy images.
I'm excited to share these methods with you and I really hope that you are all able to see similar results! Do you have any tips for marketing on Pinterest? I'd love to see them in the comments!

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I'm so glad that you found it helpful! I hope that you get great results! I'll be working on my Facebook & Google+ pages sometime soon. Let me know if you have any tips :)
DeleteGreat tips Ivy! I never thought of making my personal boards "secret" after I converted to a business account. Going to head over and make some changes!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's definitely been helpful! I still keep a couple generic boards public, the one's that will bring in new followers, but everything else is private! Let me know if you need any help too! I've been offering a package on Fiverr for social media work :)
