DIY: Marble Mugs + Giveaway

6:00:00 PM

I have to be honest, I'm super envious of all of you coffee and tea drinkers out there! I want an excuse to have a cabinet full of adorable and witty mugs, but I only drink water. That's where you come in!

I've been wanting to make marble coffee mugs for quite some time and I finally decided to just go ahead and do it! Since I don't have any use for the finished product, I thought I'd host a giveaway :)

Originally, I made two mugs using the nail polish I received in my Bloom Voxbox! It was a bright pink SinfulColors (SinfulShine) nail polish. My first mug turned out really great and the second one was good, but not my favorite. I think the only problem was letting it sit in the water for too long.

I decided that I wanted to make this giveaway extra special, so I went to the store and picked up two more nail polish colors and two more mugs. I knew I wanted to stick with the SinfulColors brand since it obviously worked for this project. However, I didn't pay close enough attention. I actually put back the two SinfulShine colors that I picked up originally and purchased two different colors. The only difference being that the tops were black instead of silver. I didn't even catch the difference until I began writing this post.

When I got home, I completed the DIY project like I normally would. However, I wasn't getting the same results that I had been before. In my Bloom Voxbox review, I mentioned that I needed quite a few coats of nail polish. I think that's the difference between the silver cap and the black cap. When I added the nail polish to the water, some of it sunk and the rest clumped together. I stirred as I normally would, but the end result did not look as pretty as the rest. I even tried adding some of the new colors to one of the earlier pink mugs for a layered look, but it didn't come out as I thought it would.

With that being said, I will only be giving away one mug now. I created four all together, but I really only think that one is up to my standards. I would never want to send you guys one of my failed pieces. Of course, I'd be happy to show you how they turned out, if you'd like to see!

If you're interested in following this tutorial, you will need the following materials:

  • Plain white mug(s)
  • Nail polish
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic tubs
  • Toothpicks or skewers
  • Lukewarm water

1. First you will need to fill up a plastic tub with lukewarm water. You will want to make sure that your plastic tube is deep enough for the mug to be completely submerged.

2. Drop a few drops of nail polish into the plastic tub. Add enough that the water begins turning the color of the nail polish. You'll also want to add a little bit more to make sure their are different variations of that color.

3. Use your toothpick or skewer to stir the nail polish into the water. You'll want to do this quickly otherwise all of the nail polish will stick to the object you're using to stir with.

4. Once you have finished stirring the nail polish and water, submerge your mug into the mixture. Make sure to hold it for a few seconds and let the nail polish stick to the mug before taking it out of the water.

5. Place the mug on a flat surface and let it dry for a few hours. Once your mug is dry, you can pat it dry to get rid of any leftover water droplets. Do not rub or scrub your mug, you could ruin the entire design.

That's all! This five step marble mug is a super simple and cheap DIY project. You can dress it up further with ribbon, monograms, and more.
